Shatter is a type of cannabis concentrate known for its high potency and glass-like appearance. It belongs to the class of extracts produced through a process called butane hash oil (BHO) extraction. Here’s a brief overview:

1. Extraction Process: Shatter is typically made by using a solvent, most commonly butane, to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant material. The resulting liquid, rich in cannabinoids, is then purged of residual solvents to create a concentrated and potent substance.
2. Consistency and Appearance: Shatter is named for its brittle, glass-like texture. It is known for being translucent and amber or gold in color. Its consistency is smooth and hard, allowing it to “shatter” into pieces when broken.
3. Potency: Shatter is renowned for its high potency due to the extraction process concentrating cannabinoids like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). It often contains THC levels well above those found in the raw cannabis flower.
4. Consumption: Users typically consume shatter by “dabbing.” This involves heating the shatter on a hot surface, known as a dab rig, and inhaling the vapor produced. Dabbing provides a quick and intense onset of effects.
5. Terpene Profile: While the extraction process can strip away some of the original plant’s flavors and aromas, some producers reintroduce terpenes to enhance the taste and aromatic profile of the shatter.
